Think You Can’t Afford In-Home Care? Think Again.

When you hear the words, “In home care,” you may immediately shutter as you think about the toll it will take upon you or your loved one’s bank account. It’s probably safe to say that given the choice and if money were no object, almost everyone would choose to be cared for in the comfort of his or her own home. Whether you need a trained medical professional or simply an extra set of hands and eyes to help throughout the day, here is a brief look at the financial options you have when considering in-home care for yourself or for a loved one:

  • While Medicare does not cover all in-home care situations, it does cover skilled nursing care, medical supplies, counseling, and physical and occupational therapy. (See for more specific information)

  • If you are over 65 and a veteran, or the spouse or widow or widower of a veteran, then there is a benefit called the Aid and Attendance Program, which awards up to $2,019 monthly for a veteran and spouse or $1,094 for the widow of a veteran. This benefit can be used to cover the cost of any companion or care giver in the home, including sons and daughters, and even applies to non-medical help. (See for help through the application process)

  • In most cases, in home care is less expensive than a live-in facility, especially when care is not needed 24/7.A 2010 survey done by Home Instead Senior Care revealed that 49% of family members overestimate the cost of non-medical care by $6 an hour. In a 2011 Cost of Care survey, in-home health care costs averaged $18-$19 an hour, compared with a private room in a nursing home which costs roughly $77,745 a year.

  • There are many more state and local organizations that can help with meals, transportation, legal advice, and insurance questions that you may have. (In California see
